Balmain, is a small town in the Sydney metropolitan area. Balmain has an interesting history as it was originally known for its coal and shipbuilding industries. The first Balmain Coal Company opened in 1857 with four pits supplying coal to steamships operating on the Parramatta River. The company eventually became one of New South Wales’ largest mining companies and Balmain’s population increased due to this booming industry. Today, Balmain is home to many historic buildings and sites including:

• Balmoral Castle (1902)
• Holy Trinity Church (1861)

This suburb is also home to historic hotels, including Dick’s Hotel, Dry Dock Hotel, Cat and Fiddle Hotel, Cricketer’s Arms Hotel, Unity Hall Hotel, and many more.

Balmain is well connected to the city by car and public transport including buses, trains, ferries. It is also cycling-friendly, and you can get around to Balmain by bike along the western edge of Centennial Park, or you can cycle down Parramatta Road.
