The Sydney CBD is the central business district for Sydney, Australia. It is bounded by Cathedral Street to the north and east, Circular Quay to the south and west. The majority of major banks in Australia have their headquarters in this area. The Australian Stock Exchange was also located here until it moved to North Ryde in 2000.
Sydney CBD has been an important part of Sydney’s growth since European settlement began back in 1788 – when Governor Arthur Phillip first claimed that land for the British Crown against what would become known as South Head Road near Rose Bay Cove. What was originally a small town became one of Asia Pacific’s most populous cities with over 4 million people living there today!
In the late 1800s, “CBD” was coined as a term to describe the commercial heart of Sydney. The expansion continued into the 20th century when new markets and shopping complexes were built in Circular Quay. Today, there are over 300 buildings that make up this area including skyscrapers such as Chifley Tower, AMP Tower, World Square, and Sydney Tower.
Sydney CBD is a vibrant area that has something for everyone including restaurants, bars, cafes, live entertainment venues, and even occasional street performers. Plus with no shortage of shopping spots to get all your retail therapy done – there’s really no need to leave this part of town!
