Dee Why Rockpool is not only an attractive spot for locals but it also draws many visitors from all over Sydney and beyond. For some people, visiting Dee Why Rockpool provides respite from busy city life or they are attracted by the chance to capture photos of this natural beauty on their camera phones. It’s so popular that there has been talk about creating something similar next door at North Manly Fish Pool but no plans have yet been confirmed.

A few facts you should know about Dee Why Rockpool:

  • In the 1930s, it was closed to swimmers but fishing continued because of its excellent fishery.
  • At one time, there were plans for a large rock pool with slides and fountains where fishermen could come and swim after work. Those plans never eventuated but some people would like to see them resurrected in order to provide Sydney’s Northern Beaches that something extra special.
  • The first rock pool in Sydney was at North Manly Fish Pool which opened in 1923. It is smaller but has the benefit of being a more sheltered spot, away from strong winds and waves that can affect Dee Why Rockpool at times.
  • The Dee Why Rockpool was originally a mangrove swamp that the ocean slowly eroded. That’s why there are no rocks – only sand, silt, and salt deposits in this once shallow basin.

You can visit this attraction at any time of the day but if you are after fish, we recommend visiting in the evening. Dee Why Rockpool is near to a few other attractions such as North Manly Beach and it’s also close to Leisure Centre which offers swimming lessons for children. This is one of Sydney’s most popular attractions and is well worth a visit.
