The Five Dock is a neighbourhood located in Abbotsford, New South Wales, and has a population of about 20,000 people. It sits on the edge of Sydney’s Inner West region with its neighbouring suburbs being Drummoyne, Eastlakes, Pyrmont, and Ultimo. As a relatively small neighbourhood it isn’t hard to find what you’re looking for in Five Dock – but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to see! This blog post will take you through everything you need to know about this iconic residential area.
History
Five Dock was originally named ‘The Five Docks’ in the 1820s when it formed part of a dockyard. The name comes from five docks that were built to load goods onto ships, with each one designated for different goods: coal, timber, ballast rock (gravel), and two wet docks where cargo could be stored or repaired before loading on ships.
In 1908 what we know as today’s residential area began developing after real estate agents leased land behind Pyrmont Bridge Street and created new streets such as Cammeray Grove. In 1912 they merged this suburb with another called Abbotsford – which had been developed by Thomas Walker between 1901-1905. It became known as North Abbotsford until the 1970s and then Abbotsford Heights. In 2003, it was renamed Five Dock to reflect its history and connection with the water.
The area is still home to many dockyards which are now used for commercial purposes such as warehouses or storage space for boats. It’s also a great place to find coffee – there are plenty of cafes in this neighbourhood!
Pubs And Restaurants:
There’re all sorts of restaurants here but if you want something quick and light try one of these two popular breakfast spots (and no judgement if you order them again!). If you want somewhere more substantial check out some pubs like The Imperial Hotel pub on Glebe Point Road where live music plays every night from Wednesday-Sunday. Abbotsfords Brewing Company offers a range of beers and pub-style food with a modern twist.
Cultural Events:
If you’re looking for something to do on the weekend, check out some festivals happening in Five Dock such as Glebe Festival which is always held at Glebe Point Road between Sydney University and Abbotsford Park. It’s free! At this festival there will be arts exhibitions, poetry readings, live music performances and more – even if it’s just to enjoy an afternoon outside under the sun. Another event worth checking out is ‘Showtime Under The Stars’ where people come together every Sunday night from May – September for dinner followed by outdoor movies shown on a giant screen in North Parramatta Reserve (just over the river). There are plenty of other festivals worth checking out too if you’re interested in live music, dance or theatre.
Transport:
As Five Dock NSW is located on the edge of Sydney’s Inner West region it isn’t surprising that there are a few different ways to get around here. The options include taking public transport with trains and buses as well as driving your own vehicle (but please obey all road rules).
