This park is named after Thomas Oatley, a prominent early landholder, and politician. The suburb was on the outskirts of Sydney at the time he purchased it in 1854. He subdivided his estate into housing blocks which became known as “Oatleyville.”
The park is located near the South Hurstville railway station on both sides of Station Parade to its southwest corner with Mortdale Road to its east. It has an area of over 20 hectares and includes two major sports ovals, playing fields used for cricket matches (such as during World Youth Day 2008), many well-maintained paths, cycleways including one along historic creek lines that dissects the grounds between some sporting facilities; there are also countless other recreational opportunities such as playgrounds for children.
The park has a wide variety of birdlife and wildlife, including numerous apple trees planted by early Europeans in the area to provide food; some gardens are also devoted to growing produce such as strawberries and tomatoes that is used by residents at nearby nursing homes.
Oatley Park was originally one of four large estates created on the outskirts of Sydney – from south-west (Thompsons Gardens), north-east (Woolwich Estate) and eastwards towards Parramatta Road). The others became Sherwood Forest, Denham Court, and Oatleyville respectively. It follows therefore that Thomas Oatley’s original intention may have been to establish an estate for his family.
Today, the park is used as a sporting precinct. There are three ovals, two of which have clubhouses and field amenities such as change rooms.
It is a great place to visit near Hurstville, NSW for a picnic or to enjoy one of the many events happening throughout the year!
