History
This suburb was originally called Cabarita Estate. The name derives from the Aboriginal word for “to sleep”.
Development began in the late 1970s and early 1980s with estates such as Trove, Cartwright, Concordia and Rothwell being developed by private developers. In recent years this suburb has seen a spike in development due to its close proximity to Homebush Bay (less than one kilometre) which is predicted to become Sydney’s new harbourfront urban centre within 30-50 year’s time. Currently there are about 700 residential dwellings in Cabarita – an increase of over 200% since 2006!
Transportation

Street Names
There are many street names in the suburb that reflect its proximity to Parramatta River, including:
- The Strandway – A representation of Sydney’s famous foreshore walk which includes the iconic Opera House
- Boat Harbour Drive – This street is bounded by large mangrove swamps providing natural protection from storm surges during times when river levels rise as well as home for various species of migratory birds such as ibis and spoonbills. It also provides excellent recreational opportunities for locals with swimming areas, fishing spots, boat ramps and play equipment.
