History

Rozella was originally called Quarry Hill when first settled by Europeans in 1837. It became Rossvale after James Ross bought land from Robert Campbell at an auction and built his estate “Rossdale” on part; with development extending southwards along Parramatta Road towards Camelia Avenue as far as what is now the intersection of Ross and Lyndhurst Streets.

Development has continued to extend southwards, with Rozelle West filling out as far as what is now Victoria Road; and then continuing westward towards the Parramatta River.

When it was first settled, Quarry Hill had a quarry on its southern side which gave the area its name. In 1864 there were plans for an extension of Sydney’s railway line from Central Station to join up with this quarry at Rozella – but instead, a new station named after nearby Annandale (which already had a rail connection) was established in Concord because of pressure from property owners who wanted their properties closer than possible city development would allow.
